| The shop is on the main street in the original old part of Warrandyte, and is one of the oldest buildings still standing. This used to be the baker's residence, built around the 1870's from 2 old mine inspectors' huts, I believe, brought together to make one house. The front section with the little windows seems to have been added at a later time, and this was the shop outlet for the Warrandyte Bakery from around 1929 to 1951, after which time the original baker Jim Walsh retired. The bakehouse is still located next door, now with its own separate shop, and has been a thriving local business for the past almost 20 years. I have been here since 1999. The Yarra River flows past the back of the shop, and it is a very popular place for locals and tourists to visit all year round. There is a new childrens playground close by, so weekends and holidays can be very busy. |
